MTN Launches Affordable 4G Smartphone Initiative in South Africa
MTN South Africa is rolling out a digital inclusion program aimed at distributing 1 million 4G smartphones to prepaid customers for as low as 99 rand. The initiative, structured in three phases, begins in May 2024 and will conclude by the end of 2026, prioritizing low-income households.
The first phase targets 5,000 users in Gauteng, followed by a nationwide expansion to over 130,000 consumers. This effort aligns with South Africa’s broader strategy to sunset 2G and 3G networks by December 2027, accelerating the transition to advanced 4G and 5G technologies.
